All red wolves that are reintroduced into their natural habitat in North Carolina are fitted with a GPS/VHF collar that allows biologists to study the red wolves’ long-term acclimation to the wild and their movements. The bright orange collars affixed with reflective material help reduce deaths by vehicle strikes and help prevent gunshot mortality due to misidentification.
